    ABSTRACT

    I am pleased to bring you Volume 13, Issue 1 of Pharmacognosy Communications. In this issue, we present an evaluation of the antibacterial activity of Epilobium parviflorum (Schreb.) Schreb. extracts against some bacterial triggers of autoimmune inflammatory diseases. Furthermore, that study also screened the extracts in combination with conventional antibiotics to examine whether the extracts could reactivate the antibiotics in antibiotic-resistant bacterial strains. We also present reviews examining the pharmacognostic and phytochemical properties of Thevetia peruviana, and another study reviewing the sedative, anti-anxiety and immunostimulant properties of Withania somnifera (L.) Dunal (Ashwagandha). A further study presents an ethnobotanical study into the medicinal plants used by the Vantangiya tribe of North-eastern Uttar Pradesh in India. Additionally, we present a study using 16S rRNA gene sequencing methods to identify environmental bacterial species. Whilst this study is not strictly examining the pharmacognostic properties of natural medicines, we have included in is this issue because accurate identification of bacterial pathogens is important for prescribing the effective therapies. That manuscript provides a case study for bacterial species identification, so is relevant to effective medical therapy and may be of interest to Pharmacognosy Communications readers. Our regular features are also continued in this issue. Two more high quality medicinal plant images are also included in this issue and a listing of upcoming conferences and meetings is also included. I encourage any conference organisers who would like to publicise their event to contact me with details so they can be included in future upcoming events sections of this journal.
